Evaluation (Prompt Cards)

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Sound effects – Challenged normal use of outside broadcasts (OB’s) by recording in a studio and placing sound effects over the top to create a sense of location. Jingles – Through using jingles it allows the radio to flow well, we added the name of the show over the top to create the jingle to be specific to the show. Presenters – It was important to ensure that our presenters spoke clearly whilst recording the bulletin, especially the news readers to allow people to hear and understand the information. We were then able to speed up the tempo without the speech becoming impaired as this allowed it to stay clear. Specialist reporters – Local radio stations use specialist reporters, we developed this through using specialist reporters for the news feed, showbiz news and weather. This allowed the show to have contrast and keep the listener interested and engaged with the show. How does your media product represent particular social groups? The news as a whole represented a variety of groups, including youth (story on 17 year old Christina Nodes) as well as families (affected by new houses in Crowthorne affecting schooling and jobs etc). The showbiz news represents a younger social group as the language used is more young and glamorous informing people of celebrity antics, which are generally seen to be consumed by younger people. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? A local radio station such as heart might distribute my product, heart is more of an upbeat radio station which I believe fits in with my news bulletin. Although it could be appropriate with other local radio stations such as radio Berkshire, the feel of the bulletin fits in better with Heat, possibly due to the showbiz news and small discussion at the start, giving it more language for a younger audience. We also used national news as well as local news to give listeners a wider range of up to date news, Heart do this also. Who would be the audience for your media product? The audience for my media product would be those travelling in the peak time of the morning, most likely to be of the age from 24-60 commuting to work or meetings. Therefore that is a wide spread of people that our radio needed to fit to and be suitable for. Through having national, local and showbiz news this allowed the news bulletin to be suitable for as many people as possible through informing them of various types of news therefore hopefully suiting a number of interests. Through it being a local station, the listeners would all be local to the area therefore the news had to be specifically relevant to their local area. How did you attract/address your audience? The audience were addressed in a friendly personal way; this creates more of a warming and welcoming atmosphere which therefore attracts listeners also. Through the use of jingles and sound effects under the news also, it created more of a fast moving and attractive feel encouraging listeners to stay tuned in. Through the presenters being upbeat in the appropriate places, this created the right atmosphere for listeners, especially those travelling to work with the day ahead of them. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? Through constructing this product I have learnt how to use recording and editing software to create an audio track. I learnt how to constructively use tempo and volume adjustment as well as creatively placing soundtracks and sound effects in the appropriate places to create atmosphere and a good pace to keep the listener interested. In places voice adjustment was also necessary to add an effect to the voice, this was used over the jingle. It was also important that we used certain effects when recording voice such as ‘male radio voice’ or ‘female radio voice’ to ensure that it enhanced the speaker’s voice rather than any background noise, the software allowed us to do this which therefore improved the quality of our sound.

Ending of song…
Presenter 1: Good morning, you’ve joined us on ‘Wake up Live’ this morning; that was Cee Lo Green with ‘Forget You,' a great start to the morning don’t you think?

Presenter 2: I certainly think so ….! A new favourite of mine.

Presenter 1: …We have the latest on those headlining news stories as well as an exclusive interview with the sister of Katie Price with the latest on her shocking break up with Alex Reid, and that's all coming up on todays show!

Presenter 1: Talking of celebs, have you heard about the latest X factor rumours?

Presenter 2: I did see something in the paper this morning regarding Cheryl Cole, I didn't get a chance to read it though...

Presenter 1: Well from what I read, its rumoured that she and possibly Simon as well are ditching the British X factor and will just be focusing on the American one...and its rumoured that Nicole Sherzinger and Adele are potential replacements? Not sure it would be the same without Simon's honesty though?

Presenter 1: Wow, I guess we'll have to wait and see! But as always we’d love to hear from you with your views and song requests, a lucky one of you will be chosen at random to choose the tune of the morning.

Jingle…

Presenter 1:
So we’ll throw you straight into today’s news with …..

Sound affects with a serious tone to introduce the news and set the scene (it is a serious matter)

Presenter 2: Good morning. It was announced late last night that the body of seventeen year old Christina Nodes was found, police discovered her body outside St Sebastian’s church in Crawford. They are asking that anybody with any information, however relevant they believe it to be to come forward and help with the investigation. Her family released a statement early this morning that stated 'anyone that knew Christina would know what a loving girl she was and the incredible motivation she had for everything in life, we know that her death will have impacted an incredibly large amount of peoples lives and we can speak for them as well as ourselves in asking that everything possible is done to find her killer.'

The destructive Earthquake that took place in Christchurch, New Zealand on Monday 21st February has caused devastation to the country. With the death toll rising to 98. The Prime Minister, John Key has warned that this number could end up exceeding at least 200. The Canterbury Television building sadly came tumbling down during the quake, it is likely that there are still up to 120 bodies trapped inside. Hundreds of families remain in devastation.

Just down the road in Arborfield there has been a devastating fire at moores stables, the cause of the fire remains unknown. No deaths occurred however three people were seriously injured while trying to rescue the horses, the stables is estimated to have gone up in flames at approximately 4:13am on Wednesday morning. The Fire and police force have reason to suggest the cause of the fire could have been intentional however this is not yet confirmed. They have asked that anybody with any information to come forward.

The mayor of Crowthorne's 25 year anniversary of being mayor will take place on Tuesday 1st March; there will be celebrations in Crowthorne high street to celebrate! The high street will be closed to vehicles however diversions will be clearly marked. Residents of Crowthorne and local Volunteers will be holding stalls with games and tombola's to add to the celebrations! The mayor's speech will take place at 1pm.

Bracknells crime rates were reviewed by the police and council earlier this week; although the rates have improved dramatically since last year they are still a cause for concern. Compared with other local areas such as Wokingham, Bracknell has almost double the amount of car thefts, break ins and drink driving. The council and police will be working together to put together projects and plans to try and improve these problems.

Controversy has been caused in the Crowthorne and Sandhurst area over application for almost 6,000 new houses to be built. Residents argue that it is a small area, and the facilities needed for this amount of potential residents are just not available. Concerned parents question if schooling is going to be fairly considered, Crowthorne currently only has one secondary school as does Sandhurst, both of which are already over subscribed every year. Others argue that it is already 'impossible' to get appointments at the local doctors surgery and they demand that this is also taken into consideration. The council will be making their final decision next week on 3rd March.
That's it for now, you've had your news update read to you by....

Jingle...

Presenter 1: We now have *insert presenters name* coming at you live from the streets of Crowthorne getting your opinions on the new build!

Presenter 3: Hey guys I'm standing outside the place where developers have proposed to build the 6000 new houses, with a group of local residents. Sorry, could I have a minute (talking to member of public) to get your views on the new builds and how it will effect you as a resident and the town?

Member of Public: I for one am disgusted at their plans to build up our area with 6000 new homes after all the new flats they've recently built. Crowthorne has always been a small, quaint town where everyone knows each other and this development will bring thousands of new residents to Crowthorne and it will destroy what this town is all about.

Presenter 3: So you feel strongly opposed to the new plans?

Member of Public: Yes, very much so.

Presenter 3: Thank you for your thoughts, and how do you think this development will effect your town if it goes through? (To another member of public)

Member of public 2: It will just destroy us as a community! Their is simply not enough space for us all to move around! The traffic will become unbearable on our small roads, and yes it'd help local businesses which is always good, but the cons outweigh the pros on this one! They simply can't go through with it!

Presenter 3: Well that seems to be the general feel here in Crowthorne, thank you for your time! Back to you Live in the studio.

Transition music...

Presenter 1:
Here's your weather update with.... The rest of the morning is looking to stay cold and dry with clouds forming during the afternoon, top temperatures today of 13 degrees. Expect strong wind and rainfalls over night with the rain continuing throughout tomorrow morning. Do be prepared for wet weather and gale-like winds. Over the next few days we are expecting some heavy downpours, we will be keeping you up to date with official met office weather warnings.

Presenter 2: Now over to ... for the showbiz news...

Presenter 4: Good morning Live listeners! Late yesterday afternoon Victoria Beckham released her official statement announcing her and David's fourth child will be a much anticipated girl. I'll keep you updated on her pregnancy as it develops.

Another top story we're hearing about this morning is Lady GaGa's new raunchy music video for her new number 1 hit Born This Way from her upcoming album. The video lasts for over 7 minutes and consists of GaGa prancing around in her underwear. However her new toned physique has raised a few eyebrows as she must have been working harder than we all thought to achieve the perfect body!

Colin Firth won four awards at last nights Oscars. When accepting one of his awards he joked about needing the loo, which is ironic as at the after party, the loo attendant ran out after him holding his Best Actor award for Kings Speech after he left it by the sink! Poor Colin must be overwhelmed with all his awards and I can easily understand how he's misplacing them!
I caught up with Katie Price's sister Sophie yesterday to talk about the recent rumours circling Katie and Alex Reids recent split. Here's what was said:

Presenter: Hi Sophie! So you're going to give us the inside scoop on the latest between your sister Katie and Alex Reid. Before rumours start spreading Sophie would like to make it clear that she is here on Katie’s consent. So Sophie, tell us, how did this all start?

Sophie: Well, Katie wants to make it clear that this did not start off as a messy break up, things just weren’t the same as they were at the start of the relationship. I think they both realised that this, was perhaps a marriage that was rushed into.

Presenter: So the couple are no longer living together?

Sophie: No, I believe that Alex is back living with his parents. They did attempt to make things work, I think Katie saw another side to Alex as things started to get tough.

Presenter: Can you expand on that for us Sophie?

Sophie: I can tell you that, as many of you may have noticed; Alex was loving the showbiz life, it was an opening for him and a way to further his career. Obviously Katie knew she was giving Alex opportunities when she first got together with him, but she didn’t expect him to be as self indulged in the media as he ended up being.

Presenter: Are you referring to the story that has been in the media recently to do with him and Juniors shoot?

Sophie: Yes, that’s a good example and is a true report. Katie had no idea of this shoot until it was released in ‘Hello’ last week, it was very much seen as a way for Alex to get the public and press on his side – he knows very well how Katie feels about the kids being exposed, she no longer wants it for them due to them growing up and it effecting their lives.

Presenter: Is that not a bit hypocritical of her though, they’ve all been exposed up until now?

Sophie: No, Katie and Peter made a decision with their management team that now is the time to pull the kids away – up until now it hasn’t affected them but with the split and now Katie and Alex’s split its not right for it to link to them.

Presenter: Okay Sophie, thank you for your time and all the best to Katie and Alex with their futures.

Presenter 1: And that was ... with the ShowBiz News! We're now gunna hit you with the live travel updates!

Presenter 2: There are slight delays on the M25 towards London, adding approximately 20 minutes to your journey, so watch out for that. We've also had a few callers ringing in and reporting an accident on the Sandhurst-Crowthorne bypass, we've been told there are emergency services on the scene. So we advice you not to take this route, as it is quite disruptive. That's all for now, but we'll keep you updated!

Presenter 1: You've been calling in with your song requests and we're going to answer your calls in just a second, stay with us on Wake Up Live!

Jingle...

Presenter 1: Okay so you've been ringing in with your song requests and now we've got a caller on the line. Hello Sammie from Aldershot, you're with us live!

Caller: Hi guys! How are you this morning?

Presenter 2: We're good thanks Sammie, and how are you? You sound bubbly this morning!

Caller: I am bubbly this morning! Just found out I only have to work half a day today! So I am loving it!

Presenter 1: Wish I was that lucky! We're gunna make your morning just that bit better! What can we play for you Sammie?

Caller: Oh I'd love to hear Price Tags by Jessie J, such a feel good song!

Presenter 1: Okay, we'll play that for you in a just a minute then Sammie, thanks for calling and have a good morning!

Presenter 2: Ah I still can't believe that Colin Firth left his Oscar on the loo!

Presenter 1: If I had found it I'd've put it straight up on eBay! Sure it must be a collectors item!

Presenter 2: I'm sure it is! Anyway this week we're giving a way an all inclusive trip for 2 to Rome where you'll stay in a luxury 4 Star hotel and we'll be giving you £1000 spending money! Definitely the trip of a lifetime! All you've got to do is answer 10 questions correctly! But if you fail to answer all 10 questions correctly you win our constellation prize which is 2 tickets to see The Beauty Manifesto curtesy of South Hill Park.

Presenter 1: Wonderful, wonderful prizes we're giving away this week. To get involved just ring our number and we'll choose a contestant just after 8 this morning! Now it's time to play the fantastic Jessie J- Price Tags, which is this weeks number 1 in the Top 40. You're listening to Wake up Live! We'll be back after this!

Consider what news stories you are going to feature linked back to audience and your research. I would also think carefully about the structure of your show- the order of events and timing.

Audience Feedback

These are some of the opinions people expressed as to which name we should use...

"I think you should use Transmission because it sounds technological and smooth. I also think you should use 'Radio' after Transmission making it 'Transmission Radio'"

"I think you should use Beam because the radio 'beams' information to listeners, it is also a catchy word as it is short and easy to remember"

"I think you should use beam because it is short and snappy and sticks in the listeners mind; it also sounds chirpy"

"I think you should use Live because it links to the fact that the radio is live and it seems appropriate for radio. I also think it should be 'Radio Live' rather than 'Live Radio' or 'Live Berkshire' "

We also carried out a vote amongst 20 randomly selected people and it was decided that we would use 'Radio Live' as our station name.

Due to the name of the radio station we have decided that we will call our show 'Wake up Live'.

Monday, 14 February 2011

Radio Name

Any of these names would be used with either 'Radio' or the area name such as 'Berkshire' on the beginning or end of them to relate them to what we are achieving which is a local radio station.

Ideas that we have come up with are...

Live
This name suggests an upbeat radio station through 'live' giving the sense of an atmosphere. It is short and to the point therefore making it a memorable name for the audience.

Airwaves
This name links in with the theme of radio however it does also bring the idea of aeroplanes and flying to mind therefore perhaps not the best name to use as people could be unsure of what it represents if they haven't heard of the station before. It is also a chewing gum brand which therefore adds another element of confusion for this name and takes away individuality.

Transmission
This links to the radio theme and gives the idea of tunes being played, it is an effective name and would be remembered by the audience. However it is quite a long name and with either the area name or 'radio' being added onto the beginning or end it would make it even longer therefore not so effective.

Play
Play is short and effective, it is relevant to music due to the idea of having to press 'play' when wanting to listen to music. It would also be easily remembered by an audience.

Beam
This name suggests a constant flow and a bright element, it is also short and effective. Another aspect of the name is a thought of happiness through 'beam' being another word for smile; it therefore has to ways to view the name making it more creative and individual.

We will now use audience feedback to help us decide which is the most suitable name for our radio station; audience feedback is the most useful information due to them being unbiased and having the best idea of what is suitable for the market due to them being our consumer.

Morning Show

Looking through all our ideas and the information we've collected we decided to create a morning show for our radio station. This gives us more of an opportunity to offer a variety of features on our show and will allow us to use our skills and sound effects to the fullest with the upbeat tempo of the show. It will also allow us to have a large viewing audience as we discovered through questionnaires that Morning is one of the most popular times to listen to the radio.

There is some good detail here. Well done. To improve, be a little more specific as to what you have learnt from your research. Keep going.

Ideas

Morning
Research showed that a morning breakfast show would be a good time to place our news bulletin, this is because it is a peak travel time with a vast amount of people tuning in. The content would need to be of a more ‘cheery’ atmosphere to prepare people for the day ahead of them, within a travel update they would want to know any problems on major roads that will concern them.
Travel
Within our morning bulletin we would include a travel update; this would be something necessary to most listeners as many tuning in at this time would be travelling on the local and major roads and would therefore benefit from a traffic update informing them of which roads to be avoiding. Being the peak travelling time roads are garunteed to be conjested in areas therefore from a local radio station this would be expected by listeners.
Jingles
As other local radio stations do, we would also include a jingle within oour news bulletin that includes the name of our radio station to inform listeners of the radio station. The jingle would be of an upbeat theme and we would aim for it to set a good mood for listeners ready for their day ahead. As well as informing listeners and setting a mood, the jingle would also be a good way for us to move from one part of the bulletin to the next in a smooth manner.
News
Travel fits into the news section as mentioned before; the news will also feature national and local headlines with a brief summary of the major information for the big stories. This will inform locals of incidents in their home area as well as larger incidents nationally.
Presenters
As found in my research from listening to other radio stations, male and female presenters are often used to create a contrast for the listeners. For example, within our news bulletin we could use a female presenter to do an interview/voxpot followed by the news with a male presenter, allowing the audience to feel the contrast in atmosphere through voice as well as background sound.
Voxpop
Depedning on where the voxpop takes place, possibly a town centre, a school, countryside etc we can use different sound effects to ensure the location is emphasised. For example, if it were to be in a town centre we could use traffic sound effects with beeping horns and the sound of lots of voices creating a bustle type feeling for the audience. It will need to quick direct quesions with on the spot answers giving the impression that's its been random with a member of the public, we would ask things such as opinions on perhaps a headlining or local news story.
Feautures
Within the news bulletin it is important to have a small selection of activity, we could include features such as; questions to the audience and request calls and texts with their views, clips of current music in the charts, competitions and games.
Sound
Being the morning sound should be an important part of the news bulletin, it is important to keep the show upbeat as everyone still has the day ahead of them. We could use jingles and backing music to do this, through using backing music behind the presenting it adds to the atmosphere and gives a consistantancy of up beat feeling.

Evening
Research showed that evening could be a potential time to place our news bulletin; being a peak time there are a vast amount of people travelling and tuning into the radio for entertainment on their journeys. The content of an evening news bulletin and radio show needs to be of a more calm atmosphere, people tend to have had a long day and therefore don’t want music of a too up beat content.
Travel
Being another travelling peak time, a radio update would be necessary in our news bulltein for afternoon. However it would perhaps not be so much of a detailed update as a morning traffic update would be, due to people travelling at more varied times, major roads in the local area would still be highlighted however.
Jingles
A jingle is necessary to inform the listener of the radio station as well as setting an appropriate mood for the show and for the listener. Therefore, with the news bulletin taking place in the afternoon/evening show, we would make the jingle to be of a more calm atmosphere than a morning one, it would still include the radio stations name and have backing music like a jingle should however to a more relaxed tempo.
News
Travel is again included in this section; listeners will also be interested in events that have occured during the day so we would list headlines of national and local news as well as breifly summarising the bigger headlines.
Presenters
As found in my research from listening to other radio stations, male and female presenters are often used to create a contrast for the listeners. However, being in the evening it is not usually expected for there to be so much of a chatty atmosphere therefore we wouldn't necessarily have to have any more than one presenter for our news bulletin.
Sound
In an evening show it is not so much of a benefit to have continuous sound, being the end of the day and with a lot of travelling people want to be in more of a calm mood therefore it is not so necessary to have backing music to presenting etc, however jingles are still appropriate.

Research Informing Planning

Questionnaires
- Showed who was listening to the radio and when, this therefore allowed us to decide the most appropriate timing to place our news bulletin at.

- Showed what people are interested in listening to, showing us the best way to attract listeners.

- We learnt that during commuting times was the most popular time that people listened to the radio, therefore the time we would want to play our bulletin at as it would reach the most people.

Artefacts
- This allowed me to analyse and listen to how other radio stations present their news bulletins.

- I learnt that it is a common factor for male and female presenters to be used to create a contrast and this is something I need to take into consideration.

- It also showed me that there is often backing music in news bulletins, this creates the correct mood for the news, usually slightly dramatic.

- The beat and tempo of the jingles before news bulletins create a mood for the time of day, for example in the morning cheery to prepare people for their day.

Product placement
- Travel times are the best time to place our news bulletin due to the amount of people tuning in from cars, this showed us that either morning or evening would be when we want to place our news bulletin mainly.

- We learnt that it will reach a vast amount of people during peak hours, therefore a very appealing time to have any radio show broadcast.

There is some good detail in your Product Placement and you explore some Instistuional practises and time of day effectively. To improve, find more data on Local Radio. I look forward to seeing more detailed RMAs that cover the skills that you will need to produce for your construction.

Product Placement

An important part of radio is ensuring that certain shows are broadcasted at the right time and in the right place with the correct content for the target audience. As my results from the questionnaire show, there are more popular times for people to listen to the radio and less popular times. Therefore I need to ensure that my clip of radio is placed in the correct slot and reaches the correct audience in a successful way.

People consume radio in a variation of ways; however I found that the most popular place for people to listen to the radio was in the car. This was between 8am and 12pm which showed me that it was on people’s journey to work and therefore the breakfast and later morning shows are very popular and reach a large majority of people. This would mean that ideally, my piece of radio would be played somewhere between these times, however, between 6 and 10pm was also a popular time for people to listen to the radio, assuming this is their journey on the way back from work this could be another option of a slot to place my piece of radio into.

However, in the car is not the only way radio is consumed. Many people have the radio on in the house a lot of the time, as a background noise and are likely to turn it up for shows they enjoy. Although radio’s are still a way of consuming radio, less and less people are buying radios in the modern day, as it is easily accessible to listen to the radio through the television or the internet; most radio stations have a ‘listen live’ option featured clearly on their website. Also, if a show someone particularly enjoys is missed in many cases it is possible to access this through the internet and listen to it from the beginning. Many ‘smart phones’ can also access radio, therefore radio is a very dominant way of entertainment, it is accessible from pretty much anywhere and a very successful industry allowing information to be spread very quickly.

Much like television, the BBC radio stations are funded through television licence fees; this means that the BBC does not play adverts throughout their shows or at all. However, local radio stations do not have the ability to use TV licence funding; this is a BBC only option. Therefore, they have to find a way to fund their shows; they do this by playing adverts on a regular basis throughout all radio shows. Depending on the length and the time adverts are played, will depend on the cost that companies will have to pay, however this cost is paid to the radio station and is the way local radio stations are funded. This is again similar to the television; adverts have to be used to fund the different channels.

As what I will be creating is a five minute news bulletin, I know that news bulletins are played throughout the day. However the show our news bulletin will be in I intend to take place between 9am-12pm daily and therefore would have more than one news bulletins in it so it should be considered whether I want to use the same newsreader each time or not. I think it is necessary to have the same newsreader in one show, not necessarily every day, but within the same show having the same newsreader ensures that the show maintains some continuation. News bulletins are usually regular within a radio show, this is because different people tune in at different times and through playing them regularly it means the news is reaching as many people as possible whereas if it was only played once an hour or every two hours it is likely that most people would miss it; it is not often that someone has the time to listen to a radio show from start to finish. Therefore the news bulletin could take place every 15 minutes, for example, 10:00, 10:15, 10:30, 10:45 and then again at 11:00. However this then may be too much, as it would be taking up 15minutes an hour of just news, therefore a good idea could be for us to have a five minute news bulletin on the hour within peak hours and a quick news recap every half an hour.

Mrs D

A good start Kerris. You need to be more specific - provide quotes and look at language. Make sure you focus more on news as this is what you have to create.

Media Artefacts

Eagle Radio
Thursday 27th January, 12:05 – 12:10pm
The clip I listened to was a traffic update, however being a local radio the update was specific and relevant to the local radio therefore making the information useful to the listeners. At the end of the traffic update the reader stated her name; although it is a formal and serious part of the radio show it creates a connection between the audience and the reader making it more personal. After this the Eagle Radio jingle is used, this is a way of reminding the audience which station it is that they’re tuned into and through using the station number is allows the audience to remember the station; '96.4 Eagle Radio'. This then goes straight into ‘Just haven’t met you yet’ by Michael Buble and at the end of this song a voice over comes on and says ‘Eagle Radio’ again reminding the audience of the station.

Heart Radio
Tuesday 25th January
The clip I listened to from Heart Radio Berkshire opened with an introductory jingle, this consisted of someone singing the show name over some background music, a common jingle in radio. Through having one of these at the beginning of the show it allows the listener to be reminded of what show it is that they are listening to, as well as creating a friendly atmosphere. The show was made up of male and female presenters which adds a contrast, the news and weather was read by a female whereas the main show was presented by a male. It is important to have a clear difference in presenter between the normal show and the news bulletin, this is due to the fact that the news bulletin is a different context to the rest of the show and needs to presented in a serious manor. Therefore having a different presenter, especially of a different gender marks a clear difference and changes the tone and attitude of the show. The news bulletin was read with local as well as national headlines, informing listeners of anything that may affect them. To end the news bulletin “you’re up to date” was spoken over background music in a serious tone however adding a lightness to the news bulletin. The news bulletin was followed by adverts, needed within a show to earn funding for a radio station.

Radio Somerset
The news bulletin started just before 6 o clock with a travel update. This opened with 'Travel', the bbc Somerset jingle was then played followed by 'here's your update...'. Male and female presnters were used for the speech, jingles, travel and news to add contrast and seperation. The travel was read by a female; conjestion and hold ups were highlighted heading in and out of somerset on the M4 and M5. The travel update then went on to highlight any delays with trains also. It then goes on to highlight phone ins, a way to add discussion to the show 'you can always give us a ring', 'more of somersets people' followed by a previous phone in clip, 'more of somersets stories' which was again followed by a previous phone in clip. To remind listeners of times it was then stated 'every weekday' 'from 6:30', 'live from where you live'(this shows its a local radio station); these phrases were alternated by a male and female presenter, again, to add contrast. Before the news update a song was then played, being a local radio station it wasn't a well known chart song but a classic.
At exactly 6 'o'clock the news update started, opening with 'time for the news'. The opening story was a international piece of news 'men stranded in Libya sound their relief when rescued...' this story was supported by a vox pop which further explained the story from one of the wives point of view and added an atmosphere. With there being other international news stories in Libya currently, the story was followed up with these; 'meanwhile in the country...'. The news then moves on to localised news, 'detectives investigating a serious assult in Bristol town centre...', 'Bristol family of 5 have been rescued', 'Mum of three in Bathampton...' this story of which was followed up with a vox pop from the Mum and her story which was raising money for the 'Help for Heros' charity. The news feed stories close with 'Final preperations are underway for the Oscars'. The news update was read at a fast moving pace however clear with the news reader making a pause between each story to give the listener a clear start and end to each story.
The weather update is opened with 'and quickly for tonight...'; the update consisted of a brief summary of what to expect 'tomorrow dry and bright in the morning but cloudy in the afternoon'. Being a local radio station a detailed weather report is not expected by the listener. Finally, the News bulletin was ended with the news reader stating her name for reference for the listeners and 'it's now three minutes past 6'.
The news bulletin ended and Kylie Minogue's 'Spinning around' track was played.

Media Artefacts

BBC Radio Berkshire
Tuesday 25th January, 1pm – 1:05pm

The first part of the clip listened to was the ending to Olly Murs’s song ‘Thinking of me’ which was recently in the charts. At the end of the song the clip went straight into a traffic update, told by a clear male voice, this was a fairly quick traffic update as it is only a local radio station therefore it can be precise and accurate. This was then followed by the BBC Radio Berkshire jingle, which is simply ‘BBC Radio Berkshire’ however with sound affects and sung/spoken in an accented voice. The blips took place immediately at the end of this as the ‘coming up’ section started; blips are the three tones that signify the time is on the hour, or half hour, so in this instance it would signify that it is exactly 1pm. Behind the female voice in the ‘coming up’ section background music is quietly present, this created more of an atmosphere and upbeat for the show; the news then follows this. Differently in the news, with it being a serious section within the show, the focus is completely on the voice, the news is read by a male voice in a very serious tone. Being a local radio station as well as the headlining national news there is focused news on the local area, for example a story on Wokingham to do with cutbacks on bin bag collection; in the news they also use a brief interview with a member of the public who was present at a headlining story, this adds a realistic sense to the news stories.

Results

Where do you listen to the radio?

The results show that 55% of the audience asked listened to the radio in the car, this backs up the idea that it is travelling to and from work like suggested in the first questionnaire. 35% listened to the radio around the house which would suggest it is in the background perhaps while housework and cooking etc are being done. 10% of people listened to the radio at work, however this is likely to be in a certain job, office jobs people don’t tend to listen to the radio so this could be the case for self employed people.

How many presenters do you prefer on a radio show?

The results show that there is correlation to show that people preferred more presenters on a radio show than less. 5 being preferred by 33%, 4 was preferred by 27%, 3 by 20%, 2 by 13% and 1 presenter preferred by just 7%. This will help me when creating my radio clip, I now know that it will be preferred by the audience that there are more than 2 people, it wouldn’t be necessary to have 5 for my clip as it is only 5 minutes long so it would complicate things, however if in the future I was to create a radio show I understand that more characters and personalities in one show does appeal to the audience.

What is your preferred part of the radio show?

The results to this question show that people didn't seem to drift towards one particular answer, it seems that it is a matter of preference therefore all areas of the show are valued and a credit to the show. However, the results showed that the most popular was music, 30% of people asked chose this answer, with the next favourite being interviews with 25% of people preferring this. Celebrity 'gossip' was the favourite of 20% of people, however live lounge was only voted by 15% and news just 10%. This therefore suggests that the news is not a favourite of the show, however the news is an important part of a radio show; as shown before radio is a very good way to get information and entertainment out to a vast number of people, therefore it is important for news to be on the radio. It is likely that people agree it is vital for news to be on radio shows however they just wouldn't choose it as their favourite in a questionnaire as it is not a form of entertainment unlike music.

Which radio station do you mostly listen to?

The results show that Radio 1 was the most popular radio station amongst those asked, 35% chose it as being the station they mostly listened to. Capital was also another favourite, with 20% of votes; the results show that the least listened to amongs those asked was eage and heart, both with only 5%. However this could be to do with aspects such as Capital and Radio 1 being very well known radio stations and their well known reputation of being an entertaining radio station with both stations having benefits such as Radio 1 do their 'big weekend' and Chris Moyles (their main morning presenter) has his own chat show now also, which is good advertisement for them. Capital also hold a 'Jingle Bell Ball' and 'Summertime Ball' every year at the o2 arena in London, therefore a very big event; this would make good advertisment for the radio station.

Results analysis

What age group do you fit into?

It is clear from this chart that the majority of the people answering the questionnaires were of the younger age range; I would predict that this would influence the music type listened to, to have a vast majority of one category.

What gender are you?

My results show that over 50% of the people participating in my questionnaire were female; this could therefore affect my results in the way that the results from genre listened to, varies between the sexes. I can therefore take this into consideration when analysing that result.

Do you listen to the radio?

This result shows that 88% of the people asked listen to the radio, this shows that it is a popular source of entertainment and reaches a vast majority of people.

What times do you listen to the radio between?

The results here tell me that the most popular time for people to listen to the radio is between 8am and 12pm; this is therefore likely to be whilst getting ready in the morning or on the way to work – this idea is supported by the fact that 19% also listen to the radio before 8am which is the same idea (some people travel to work earlier, usually between 6am and 9am). 19% also listened to the radio between 3pm and 6pm, this could be parents picking children up from school or activities, therefore the radio might be on in the car (my further questionnaire will give me more confirmation of this). 25% of people listened to the radio between 6pm and 10pm, this is likely to be peoples journeys home from work, therefore in the car again. Between 12pm and 3pm is not a time that people seem to listen to the radio, it is the middle of the day and people are therefore preoccupied with other daily tasks. And after 10pm is not a time people listen to the radio, likely to be because they are socialising or using other ways of technology such as watching the television.

What genre do you listen to?

The most popular genre of music listened to was R&B at 37%; this most likely is related to the fact that over half of the people answering my questionnaire were between the ages of 10 and 18; R&B is also a genre of music that is featured in the charts weekly, usually a dominant genre in the charts. Pop was the next most popular, with 27% of people listening to pop, this again is likely to link with the charts because pop is also a main genre that regularly features in the charts. 16% of people listen to dance, this is music that often features in clubs and with the main age group being 10 to 18, this could be a reason for that. Indie, rock and classical had smaller percentages, these are not music genres that are regularly features high up in the charts, therefore it takes other methods of advertisement etc to encourage people to listen to these genres of music.

How often do you listen to the radio?
The results show that 50% of people that answered the questionnaire listen to the radio once a day. This again shows that the radio is a good source to get information and entertainment to a wide audience. And 31% listen to the radio twice a day or more, therefore combined with the people that listened to the radio once a day this is 81% of people that do listen to the radio every day. 6% listen to the radio once a week and 13% rarely which shows that in comparison the radio is a successful source of entertainment and it is listened to by a wide audience, as 81% is a large majority of people.
